South Belfast MP Dr. Alasdair McDonnell today attended the launch of an architectural design competition to build 70 pioneering eco-friendly homes in Carryduff.
The competition to design the groundbreaking development of 30 social and 40 affordable homes to the Code 5 rating for Sustainable Homes, the highest rate there is, in Killynure near Carryduff was launched by Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie.
Speaking afterwards Alasdair McDonnell said: “Building high spec sustainable social and affordable homes is the way forward. It is essential if we are to meet our reduced carbon emission targets and is also a key weapon in the war against fuel poverty.
“Eco-friendly homes are more energy efficient, are proven to reduce energy bills and have a positive impact not just on the disposable income but also on the lifestyle of households.
“This new cutting edge housing development represents an exciting partnership between the Department for Social Development, the Housing Executive, Oaklee Housing Group and the Royal Society of Ulster Architects and the Minister must be applauded for bringing it forward.
“This scheme will utilise innovative technologies to produce the first Code 5 Sustainable Homes development in Ireland and I am delighted that Carryduff is to be the site for this pioneering housing initiative”.
